Welcome to our series of interviews with Barossans, this week we catch up with Colin Sheppard – Owner/Winemaker at Flaxman Wines.

1   What would you like to do if you weren’t working in the wine industry?
Lay on the beach

2   What do you love most about your job and why?
I love the fact that it rarely feels like a job.  You are outdoors a lot of the time and meeting some great new people with similar interests and share a passion for what we do.

3   What was your first car?
XA Falcon Wagon.

4   What grape variety or wine style most interests you at the moment?
Gruner Veltliner.

5   What are you listening too at the moment?
Fiona (my wife) complaining about her broken wrist.

6   What is your favourite dish to cook?
Making and cooking fresh pasta.

7   What is your idea of perfect happiness?
A glass of chilled Riesling (Eden Valley of course) and a plate of freshly cooked whiting – pretty simple, like me.

8   When you’re not working what do you like to do?
Fishing or a game of golf – not that it happens very often.

9   What is your greatest extravagance?
My motorbike – it sits in the shed for a great deal of the year but I can’t bear to part with it.

10   What are you reading at the moment?

11   What is your favourite city/country to visit and why?
Melbourne for the food.

12   What is the most memorable wine/s you have tried?
Bottle of 1962 Seppelt Vintage Port drunk with good friends for my 50th birthday.

13   Who are your heroes in real life?
Mick Doohan and my dad.

14   What are your top 3 Barossa tips?
Linke’s smoked chicken
The verandah of the Valley Hotel on a Friday afternoon
Lunch or dinner at Fermentasian

15   What would be your chosen superpower?
X-ray vision so I could see if Fiona’s wrist is really broken or if she is just complaining about it.

16   If you could meet anyone in the world dead or alive who would it be and what would you say to them?
My grandparents and I would say nice to meet you as they had all passed away before I was born.

17   If you were stranded on a desert island, what three items would you take with you?
Fishing rod, frying pan and riesling.

18   If you died and came back as a person or thing, what would it be?
It would be pretty tough to top my life so far, so  just more of the same thanks.

19   What makes the Barossa special to you?
The sense of community and wonderful food and wine – it is always good to come home.

20   What is your motto?
The glass is half full.
