Today we throw our 7 questions to Bernie Kaeding. The quietly achieving winemaker, artist and mother of a ‘sometimes helpful son’ from Rojomoma. Red Art.
What are you best known for?
Red Art Shiraz and Red Art Grenache
What’s growing in your garden?
Shiraz, Grenache, Cabernet Sauvignon, Tempranillo, Petit Verdot. At home…lots of bamboo!
What’s your Friday night knock-off of choice?
A chilled, light red
What’s your favourite time of year in Barossa?
Spring. I love the sense of growth and life as the vines come out of dormancy and the excitement having a glass of wine on the back deck.
What’s the story behind your label art?
I am an artist and photographer. The photography I use in my Red Art labels is inspired by our vineyard and reflects our ground, middle and sky environment. I have also incorporated some of my sister’s wonderful paintings. For the whimsical Wild Scarlet labels, I drew a series of elegant worldly ladies holding the beautiful Kennedia Prostrata plant with stunning scarlet red flowers. It’s native to Barossa and celebrates our much-loved region and the surrounding conservation parks that we enjoy hiking in.
Weird but wonderful food match?
Grenache with a medium Indian curry
Most vivid Barossa food and wine memory?
Tasting hundreds of Barossa wines as an associate judge in the Barossa Wine Show!
This image is my little play with faux street art. It’s no Banksy, but I had fun with my Wild Scarlet Banksy inspired image. This wordly lady from our Wild Scarlet Shiraz Cabernet will be making an appearance at the Festival.
You can meet Bernie and 44 of our other winemaking and distilling friends as Barossa. Be Consumed x Wonderwalls hits Port Adelaide on Saturday, March 7!
